Take Action

Stop Jim Crow Juvenile Justice

Thank You for Keeping Beaumont Closed!

RISE for Youth asks you to join us in thanking our legislators for keeping the shuttered Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center closed!

Our General Assembly recently finalized a budget that DID NOT include a proposal to build a new 156-bed juvenile prison facility on the recently shuttered Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center property. Instead, the budget included an amendment to study the Powhatan property to assess best use, which potentially could include granting part of the property back to Parks and Recreations and further economic development for Powhatan County! Thank you, to the Senate and House money committee Conferees, and all of our legislators who listened to the voices of youth, families and communities who resoundingly said, “Keep Beaumont closed!”

Please take action now to tell your legislators two (2) things:

  1. Let your legislators know you appreciate their actions to stop the proposal to send our youth in need of the greatest support back to the isolation of a rebuilt Beaumont JCC.
  2. Ask your legislators to reinvest all of the savings from the closure and some of the proceeds from selling the Bon Air property to continue supporting the building of a full range of community-based alternatives – from counseling and diversion to job training and youth development – to support our youth in need!
